WHY THE CROSS PIECE?
One
of the subjects often mentioned in relation to "The Prisoner" is
the religious imagery possibly contained within the series, yet this has not
been captured in book form - until now. "The Truth is Out There - Christian
Faith and the classics of TV Science Fiction" (Brazos Press, 2006) is
now available from the US Amazon site, and looks at 6 different series, including
"Dr Who", "Babylon 5" and "The Prisoner".
Co-author Dr Kim Paffenroth, an Associate Professor in Religious Studies, told us; "Over the last couple of years, I've found myself obsessively watching my tapes of old TV series, rather than the garbage that is presently scheduled. My fascination with these series is, I think, broadly religious or spiritual: series like The Prisoner speak to what is transcendent in us, our yearnings for meaning and purpose and freedom in an often dehumanizing world. I therefore present in the book why these series are not just entertainment, but can be profoundly uplifting experiences for viewers."
