THE UNMUTUAL

The Prisoner - The Soundtrack Albums - A brief history and tracklistings

by Dan Kreeger

Documented here are the authorised soundtrack albums of the 1967 TV series ‘The Prisoner’, released up to spring 2017, be they an LP (vinyl, analogue disc) or a CD (polycarbonate plastic, digital disc). Records released on CD might also be available to purchase as downloadable files via the World Wide Web. This document will be expanded soon and any submissions of further detail or correction would be welcome, especially regarding the versions and timing of the early LP releases.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

1986: The first vinyl release was a fan-club organised gatefold edition released on Bam Caruso Records (which also came with a free booklet), using original master tapes. There was a limited run of 601 copies.
The album editor has stated that after the mastering session, three signatures were added to the run-out groove of the acetate master. If you own a copy of the first LP, it is only a genuine first pressing if it has those tiny signatures.
The LP has the first fifteen tracks on the first side and the remaining eleven on the second. These are a selection from the original recordings of everything composed or recorded for the series. All music written especially for the series was by Robert Farnon, Wilfred Josephs, Ron Grainer and Albert Elms.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

1989: Silva Screen makes the first of its Prisoner releases, this one being a new pressing of the first album, now on LP, cassette, and CD. In 1991, Volume Two contains a selection of the recordings used in the series that came from the Chappell Recorded Music Library. In 1992, Volume Three contains further selections from Chappell’s.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

2002: Silva Screen remasters the original three volumes of Prisoner soundtrack music. The music tracks are presented in the order of the original episode transmissions and relevant snippets of dialogue are interspersed here and there. All three CDs can still be found online (Original Television Soundtrack, File #1, 2, 3).
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

2008: Network releases an exhaustive, 3 CD Original Soundtrack set of the vast majority of the original recordings specially composed or made for The Prisoner, by Robert Farnon, Wilfred Josephs, Ron Grainer and Albert Elms, including unused cues. Still available, it boasts a slipcase, DVD packaging, extensive new notes by Eric Mival and facsimile pages from the ‘Music Bible’ – the music editing notes made for The Prisoner. From this, there was also a single disc release of 58 unnamed ‘Highlights’, now deleted.
In 2015, Network brought things full circle with its release of a limited edition, audiophile-level, vinyl LP available in a gatefold. It has 43 minutes of the original music composed and recorded for the series and is also available on white vinyl in an overprinted, transparent plastic sleeve (to create a Rover attack effect).
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

2010: A special collector’s 3 CD charity set is released through The Unmutual Website. Limited to 1000 copies, it’s a comprehensive collection of incidental music from the Chappell Recorded Music Library, as used in The Prisoner. Produced by Derek Lawton, with proceeds from his portion going to Kirkwood Hospice, its 56 page booklet has an episode by episode, scene by scene listing of all the music used in the series (library, original soundtrack and commercial tracks) and extensive notes with an introduction by Eric Mival, the second music editor on the original TV series. It comes in DVD packaging with 174 minutes of music in 100 tracks, many available for the first time on CD.

With no sign of the updates mentioned years ago (see below), if you have the Network 3 CD set, it is worth obtaining this before it’s gone. The set is still only available from The Unmutual Website Village Shop, their benefit being an included contribution to the site’s event fund for Ty Gobaith Hospice:

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

2017 : Network releases a limited edition box set to mark the 50 th anniversary of The Prisoner, containing a revised book, a new Blu-ray set and a 6 CD set. All three are available separately. ‘ The Prisoner, Original Soundtrack & Library Music Remastered ', or ‘Complete Series Soundtrack' according to the cover of the extensively researched accompanying booklet, combines specially composed and library music from The Prisoner, plus unused compositions and alternate takes, all remastered.

Hunting Down the Albums

The original soundtrack LPs have long been unavailable, as have the first three CDs released by Silva Screen. They would have to be purchased as second hand items. The Network and Chappel releases are available HERE.

Addendum (from the producer, Derek Lawton)

Sadly, there are two Chappell cues I overlooked:

FALL OUT: Funeral March by Paul BONNEAU (TCR 102) should replace his Funeral (TCR 106). I did check this out yet the wrong track got through.

THE CHIMES OF BIG BEN: Series One: Section 2 (C 894B) by Denis RYCOTH should replace his Series Two: Section 1 (C 894A). The former is a better tune.

CHECKMATE: Swing Hoe by Robert FARNON (C 459A) did not feature in the series, though is referenced in some places.
THE GIRL WHO WAS DEATH: The fanfare at the beginning of Roger ROGERS' Arabian Market (C 804A) was omitted from the source disc issued by Chappell.

I have also gone through the original edits of ARRIVAL and CHIMES... which include an additional four Chappell cues. I will include all the above in a budget supplementary CD complete with the best of the unused Chappell cues short-listed by Bob Dearberg and Eric Mival - 321 in total excluding those cues used.
