DALEKS INVADE THE VILLAGE

Friday April 9th, 2004: The most feared and ruthless race in the Universe has invaded Number Six's cottage! The Daleks, those cold, merciless dominators of the galaxy have reached the Village...and the Cybermen have joined them in a two-pronged attack! Fear not though, for the Time Lord known only as The Doctor has also arrived, and he has a proven track record of vanquishing the alien menaces.

No, it's not a plot for the new Doctor Who series, but the Daleks, Cybermen, and The Doctor ARE in the Village...as a toy range added to the shelves of The Prisoner Shop in Portmeirion. In addition to the various Prisoner items on sale in the shop, customers can now buy talking sound-chip enabled articulated models of Daleks, a Cyberman, and Tom Baker's Doctor (the latter accompanied with a talking K-9); a Clockwork Dalek; and a Crystalized Dalek ornament.

Of course, parts of the 1976 Doctor Who story "The Masque of Mandragora" (starring Tom Baker) were filmed in Portmeirion, so there is a tenuous link. However, that wouldn't seem to explain why the shop is also selling an Eagle Transporter from the Gerry Anderson series Space: 1999. Nevertheless, this attempt to widen the interest in "passing trade" could be beneficial to The Prisoner Shop, and is applauded. After all, Portmeirion's food and wine store 'Pot Jam' sells more than pots of jam...
