PRISONER INSPIRATIONS

Over the years, many film-makers have quoted "The Prisoner" as being an important and influential part of their work. One of the most famous is J. Michael Straczynski, the creator of "Babylon 5". As well as adding a few "Prisoner" references in his series, he also wrote the foreward to the recent Powys Media novel "The Prisoner's Dilemma".

As well as he, news has reached The Unmutual that none other than Joss Whedon, creator of the TV series' "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", "Angel", and "Firefly" and writer of the "Toy Story" movie and "The Astonishing X-Men" comic has also cited "The Prisoner" as a favourite. In a podcast at the official website for the forthcoming "Firefly" film "Serenity", he said "It was hugely beloved and influential to me but I am far too didactic to ever be that abstract".

Another celebrity to mention "The Prisoner" recently is English actress Maureen Lipman, interviewed in the Guardian about the re-generation of Birmingham, she said: "Melting-pot kids leapfrog bubbling water features and there is an actual ice-cream cart manned by a boy in a straw boater. I feel slightly weird, as though I've wandered on to the set of The Prisoner and Patrick McGoohan is waiting to twist a balloon for me." Full article can be seen HERE.
